Grant (Macbeth Equivalent: Banquo, though he survives longer)

Physical: Age: 30 Ht: 6' Wt: 165 lbs. White hair, brown eyes. Scar on chest.

Afflilation: Grant is a plainsclothes operative of Trilogy's (the company) private police force. Those that understand the innerworkings of the City know that they are the true law and order on the streets. Grant is Umber's unofficial partner.

Likes: Max, his daughter Owly, hanging around with Umber and the rest of the security clan. Umber (they are quite close).

Dislikes: Arkady, guns, being on the receiving end of violence.

History: Grant has a bit of a murky past, mostly owing to an agreement between him and Umber: that all records of his childhood should be destroyed. It is generally thought that at one point Grant was abused by his father, and removed from his home by aid workers. He soon ended up living on the City streets, where, through a complicated series of events, met Umber and was employed by Trilogy. Not a Trilogy supporter, he swapped information about the Company to Alistaire in exchange for a safe place for Owly (daycare is expensive). Later he met Max became rather smitten with her... which forced him to re-evaluate his life, and finally take a stand against Umber and Arkady.
He is close to Umber (as close as the other will allow, that is), as the two discovered they had many simularities, ie, miserible childhoods, an overdeveloped sense of right and wrong, and fairly frustrating love lives. As he is essentially betraying his friend by associating with Alistaire and the Edge 102 gang, Grant deals with a lot of guilt, but justifys his actions: he dislikes Arkady and sees her control of the City extremely damaging.

Personality: often quiet and moody, Grant is nevertheless a kind individual. He tries his best to shield Owly from the horrors of everyday City life, and to make the most of things. Unlike Umber, who he is unfortunately close to, Grant recognizes the state the City has fallen into, due to Arkady's misuse of it. There is safety and great economy, but it has come at the price of freedom.

Notes: he's always had the white hair. No idea why, he just has. Originally, he was a lot nastier and spent a lot of time fighting with Umber... but someone with a young child really shouldn't act thus, IMHO, so he evolved into something kinder, quieter and more open to someone like Max in his life. I like him. He's kind of the moral centre of the story; an ordinary person thrown into uncomfortable circumstances who is simply trying to survive and keep his own soul.
